the spatial concentration of Green support
Monday September 13, 2010
I did some poking and prodding of the polling place data, looking at the way Green support is highly concentrated in the inner-capital cities (and in Melbourne and Sydney, in particular). There are a few interesting exceptions that will make sense to Australian readers: Nimbin, Kuranda, Broome…
A sample graph from the report:

Very worthwhile, and thanks for going the extra mile and including the R code!
Nice analysis. It really contrasts how different the inner city left is to the suburban left. I think it is almost impossible for a single party to appeal to both.
NSW state election must be giving the Labor party apparatchiks some sleepless nights: Greens, leftist independents may not leave a lot of room for Labor candidates. Should be interesting.
Thanks Ken. I actually did a little follow-up on the back of your comment re the difference between the “inner-city left” and the “suburban left.” I plotted Green 1st preference share against distance from the GPO, but restricted the plot to 60kms around the state/territory GPO.
